Korfballs
Korfball is played with a specific type of ball that adheres to the standards set by the International Korfball Federation (IKF). The official korfball is a size 5 ball with a circumference between 68.0 and 70.5 cm and a weight ranging from 445 to 475 grams. It must be at least two-colored and inflated to a pressure that allows it to rebound to a height of 1.10 to 1.30 meters when dropped from 1.80 meters.
While the IKF specifies the standard size 5 ball for official play, manufacturers produce korfballs in various sizes to accommodate different age groups and training needs:
- Size 3: Suitable for younger players, typically under the age of 11.
- Size 4: Designed for players aged 11 to 15, providing a slightly smaller and lighter ball to facilitate skill development.
- Size 5: The official size used in senior and professional levels of play.
In the UK, two primary manufacturers, Mikasa and Molten, produce IKF-approved korfballs. Mikasa’s K5-IKF model is recognized as the international standard, featuring a blue and yellow design. Molten’s IS5SL model, the official korfball for British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS), is made from scuff-resistant and waterproof polyurethane leather.
Selecting the appropriate korfball size and model is essential for player development and adherence to official game standards.
